Following the SBE16-Thessaloniki conference, SBE19-Thessaloniki “Sustainability in the built environment for climate change mitigation” attempts to address a large palette of issues concerning sustainability and consider their interrelation with regard to climate change.
The previous experience of the organizers, as well as the favorable weather conditions, the city’s and the country’s hospitality and Thessaloniki’s historical background create the environment for a successful event.
The conference is organized by the Laboratory of Building Construction and Building Physics, Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and is part of the SBE18-20 Conference series.
The Sustainable Built Environment (SBE) conference series which began in 2000, operate on a three year cycle and now include five international organizations as co-owners:
The conference series place a core emphasis on peer-reviewed papers, presentations of regional policy papers, displays of pre-evaluated projects and a small number of high-quality commercial exhibits. These events also provide fast-track inclusion of the best technical papers from national/regional conferences into the global event, as well as registration policies designed to encourage the attendance of students and delegates from developing countries.
Twenty national/regional conferences took place in 2016 and a World SBE17 conference took place in Hong Kong during 5-7 June 2017. Fifteen organizations have proposed to hold regional conferences during 2018 and 2019, and a global event is planned for Gothenburg in 2020.
In all of these events, one or more local research-based organizations have taken financial and organizational responsibility while the international series owners, iiSBE, CIB, UN Environment and FIDIC, have given organizational advice and have used their networks to help ensure a large multidisciplinary audience for the events.

The regional conferences of SBE 18-20 series will pave the way to the world sustainable built environment conference BEYOND 2020. BEYOND 2020 will take place in Gothenburg 9-11 June 2020 and it is organised by Chalmers University of Technology and RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden), with the support of Johanneberg Science Park and Gothenburg City. It aims at sharing insights in various sustainability-related fields, while also summing up key-learnings from regional conferences, taking place all over the world in 2018 and 2019 (see below). It’s important to keep a holistic view endorsed by a global perspective, as well as a local approach when planning our cities and communities of the future. The conference web site is https://beyond2020.se .
The conference topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
The submitted abstracts and full-papers will be double-blind peer reviewed by the members of the scientific committee.
Papers presented at the conference will be published in IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science journal, indexed in Scopus, on a gold open access basis.
Selected conference papers will be invited for possible publication in a special issue of the prestigious International Journal of Energy Research (IF:3.009), after a peer-review process.
Additionally, selected papers presented at the conference will be proposed for publication in scientific journals, after significant revision and peer-review.
